Robert J. Balch
Co-Chair, Liquor Liability Practice Group
Robert J. Balch is a Principal in the Firm's Casualty Litigation Department and is the lead Principal for the Casualty Department in the Firm’s Allentown Office, which serves the Lehigh Valley, eastern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Mr. Balch is also Co-Chair of the Firm’s Liquor Liability Practice Group.
As Co-Chair of the Liquor Liability Practice Group, Mr. Balch has successfully defended bars, restaurants, casinos, fraternal organizations, colleges, clubs and property owners from allegations of improper alcohol service, lax security, hazing, and criminal conduct by patrons, employees, and guests. He is often retained to oversee and conduct investigations well before civil litigation commences in high exposure matters. In addition to litigation, Mr. Balch has consulted for and presented to business owners, brokers, and insurers on risk mitigation and best practices in alcohol service and oversight.
In addition to liquor liability, Mr. Balch maintains an active premises liability practice and defends clients involved in litigation arising from injuries occurring on property. His representative clients include roller skating rinks, bowling alleys, and other family entertainment facilities; country clubs and golf courses; hospitals; commercial landowners; management companies; colleges and schools; snow, landscaping, and construction subcontractors; grocery stores; retail tenants; fraternal organizations; and casinos. His practice includes representation of municipalities and academic institutions sued for personal injury, civil rights, and statutory violations. He litigates matters which frequently involve complex issues and catastrophic injuries in both state and federal courts.
Finally, Mr. Balch’s products liability practice includes the defense of national and international manufacturers and distributors sued for civil damages stemming from consumer products, medical devices, and automobiles alleged to have been defective and caused injury.
Mr. Balch was recognized as a Super Lawyer Rising Star in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2017, he was named to Lehigh Valley Business Magazine's "Forty Under 40," an annual list that recognizes, “the Greater Lehigh Valley's most accomplished young businessmen and women who share a commitment to business growth, professional excellence, and to the community." Mr. Balch is active in providing volunteer legal services and received the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania’s Pro Bono Roll of Honor award for the services he provided to members of the community who were unable to afford legal representation.
Mr. Balch is a Director with the Radnor Wayne Little League and can be frequently found on various sports fields in his local community.
