White Collar Principal Peter Hardy Serves on Digital Currency Panel at ABA Section of Taxation Joint Fall Meeting on Sept. 20

September 3, 2014

On September 20, Internal Investigations & White Collar Defense Principal Peter D. Hardy served on a panel discussion, "Bitcoins: What You Need to Know About Virtual Currency," at the 2014 Joint Fall Meeting of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section on Taxation in Denver, CO.

The panel, moderated by former Assistant Attorney General of the Tax Division, Kathryn Keneally, brought together IRS speakers and private practitioners to discuss emerging issues concerning virtual currency — what is it, how does the IRS view it, how it can be used, and how it can be abused. Panelists discussed the IRS treatment of virtual currency, and the evolving experiences of criminal investigators and practitioners.

In addition to Mr. Hardy, panelists included Andrew J. Keyso, Associate Chief Counsel, Income Tax & Accounting, IRS; Bryan Skarlatos, Kostelanetz & Fink LLP; and Rebecca A. Sparkman, Director, Operations, Policy & Support, Criminal Investigation, IRS.
