Steve Fox and Cindy Haines Provide Insight on CMS Meaningful Use Audits for the AHLA's Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law
October 18, 2016
In the October 2016 issue of the American Health Lawyers Association's (AHLA) Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law, Information Privacy & Security Practice Group Co-Chairs Steven J. Fox and Cynthia A. Haines examined meaningful use audits conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
CMS conducts meaningful use audits to address the risk of fraud, abuse, and misspending related to the organization's Electronic Health Records (EHR) Incentive Program that requires eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals to:
- Own and implement a Certified EHR.
- Register with Medicare, Medicaid, or both.
- Demonstrate meaningful use.
- Attest to certain information.
The article provides a detailed overview of meaningful use audits and offers detailed best practices for gathering, creating, and reproducing supporting documentation that will be invaluable in the event of an audit and/or an appeal.
